Manfred Kofi Gyamerah-Ako was born on January 29, 1954, at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, Ashanti region. Known affectionately as "Teacher Kofi" or "Kofi Manfy, " he was the seventh of nine children born to Mr. Martin Swithin Ako and Mrs. Dora Susanna Ayebea Ako, both of blessed memory. He began his formal education at age five at Agogo Presbyterian School and later moved to Konongo for middle school, living with his older sister Mabel. Teacher Kofi excelled academically, particularly in Mathematics, and was known for his gentle nature, humor, and willingness to help others.
After excelling in the common entrance examinations, Teacher Kofi earned a place at Konongo Odumase Secondary School (KOSS). His academic prowess, particularly in Mathematics, led him to the prestigious Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School (PRESEC) in Legon for his sixth form, which he completed in 1975. During this period, Teacher Kofi was not only academically gifted but also a talented footballer and all-round athlete. His faith journey began to take shape as he became an active member of the Scripture Union at both KOSS and PRESEC.
Following his A Levels, Teacher Kofi pursued professional accounting qualifications. He began his career at Social Security Bank (now Société Générale), where his commitment and leadership skills quickly set him apart. Driven by his passion for accounting, he moved to Peat Marwick (now KPMG) in Accra, where he continued to rise through the ranks. This period marked the foundation of his professional life and the development of his leadership skills.
In 1985, Teacher Kofi joined Asene Household Utensils in Achimota, where he worked until 1992. During this time, he became increasingly involved in Christian ministry. He was elected president of the Emmanuel Congregation Bible Study and Prayer Group (BSPG) from 1988 to 1992. Under his transformative presidency, he facilitated the handover of the Gbegbeyisei church to the Trinity Congregation, established the Sakaman church (now Ramseyer Congregation), and planted the Nazareth and Victory Congregations.
In 1992, Teacher Kofi retired from his professional career to dedicate himself fully to Christian ministry. He became the first elected president of the Dansoman District BSPG, serving until 1998. This period saw significant achievements, including the establishment of local BSPGs and the planting of new churches. Together with his wife, Mama Ellen, whom he met at the Emmanuel Congregation BSPG, they established the Asem Fellowship, a non-denominational Christian fellowship dedicated to teaching and evangelism. Teacher Kofi also trained at The Caleb Leadership Institute, focusing on family psychology and counselling.
During this period, Teacher Kofi's ministry expanded significantly. He became the Associate Director of The Caleb Leadership Institute and a highly sought-after speaker and counsellor. Together with Mama Ellen, they raised six children: Barbara, Nana Abena, Kobby, Ayebea, Emmanuella, and Ohemaa. Teacher Kofi was known for his devotion to his family, instilling in his children a love for God, hard work, integrity, and kindness.
In his final years, Teacher Kofi found great joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Despite facing health challenges, he remained optimistic and engaged in his ministry and community work. He devoted significant time to community projects and mentoring youth. Teacher Kofi passed away on the morning of Monday, April 22, 2024, at UGMC Hospital in Legon, leaving behind a lasting legacy of love for God and people, dedication to truth, and a standard of excellence that continues to inspire all who knew him
